Alison Fraser, the Director of Operations of Zinc | lnVision Hospitality (ZIH) Malaysia

Alison Fraser is the director of operations of Zinc | lnVision Hospitality (ZIH) Malaysia, a Bangkok based Hotels group, which specializes on midscale hotel brand in South East Asia. She shared her thoughts on the directions of GLOW Penang and why is it important to have a hotel which absorbs local character and sits comfortably in its neighborhood.

 

 

1. Tell us a little about ZINC lnvision Hospitality and its affiliation to Glow Penang.

Zinc I lnVision Hospitality is a cutting edge hospitality company breaking new ground through pioneering hospitality products that stand out for the value and experience they provide to guests and stakeholders. We provide strategy, management and brand-related investments for new or existing hospitality projects throughout Asia and the MEA – managing each hotel, resort, restaurant and residential project to its full potential. The property in Macalister Road is the fourth GLOW hotel after three which opened earlier in Thailand, two of which are located in Bangkok and one in Phang Nga. GLOW Penang is owned by The Nomad Group Bhd, a regional integrated provider of serviced offices, hotels and serviced residences. ZIH will manage the hotel in partnership with Brand Bon Ton Sdn Bhd.

 

2. How do you envision the concept would fit into the George Town hospitality scene? And how the Hotel is setting itself apart from competitors?

We work best in cities with strong tourist numbers and a localized market. Location wise, GLOW Penang is situated just a 10-minute walk from Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak (KOMTAR). The hotel is a 5-minute drive from the UNESCO World Heritage area. Dining options at Gurney Drive are also just a 5-minute drive away, while the Penang Port is a 10-minute drive away and Penang International Airport is a 20-minute drive away. As far as servicing the tourism industry, our focus would have been on the local and neighboring countries tourists, and we certainly check all those criteria, but really GLOW is for everyone. We believe that a comfortable and clean room, a good shower, free Wi-Fi and basic amenities are what every tourist look forward to. GLOW sits in the middle of George Town, providing affordable rooms to tourists with an innate sense on exploring every nook and cranny of this heritage town. GLOW does not create barriers from the world outside its door, rather, we blend in with the surrounding environments as guests have easy access to local attractions the moment they step out of the hotel.

 

3. We see a lot of indie arts being displayed in and around the hotel, is this initiative part of absorbing the George Town's characters?

The murals are indeed intended to bring some of Georgetown's character to the hotel, as well as providing more colour and ambiance and engaging our guests to post pictures and selfies on line. We have 3 different murals flowing from the lobby to the 1st floor. The one in the lobby, which starts in the corner by the seating area, flows up into ZEST Bar Cafe all the way to the back covering the ceiling and walls. This mural depicts many of Penang's characteristics and was painted by Poodien, a renowned local artist. The painting by the pool, a comic art mural, is a signature piece done by Mr. Philip Hemnell who is also a local artist. The last mural which is located in the Pool Bar is a work done by RONE, a very famous Australian artist who paints female portraits which are incredibly life like. This mural by him depicts a local Penang beauty staring at a rose.

 

4. From a business standpoint, where would you like to have the GLOW Hotel, in the mind of investors? What sort of word would you use to describe the group as a whole?

Our management team consists of renowned entrepreneurs and experts from both within and outside the hospitality world – people who know how to achieve success and understand how to develop sustainable business models that generate profit year-after-year, making us an ideal partner in all hospitality projects. We believe that working together with our partners makes us stronger. With this in mind, we chose the name Zinc because similar to the attributes of the essential mineral, Zinc I lnVision Hospitality is a strong company on its own but gets stronger when combined with like-minded partners who possess the same vital spirit of entrepreneurship & innovation.

 

5. What other new developments can we look forward to from the group?

At the moment we are in talks with other properties in Malaysia and Vietnam and hope to have more news soon. Upcoming openings this year include the 5th GLOW hotel worldwide and our 3rd in Bangkok, GLOW Ratchada 12 which will be opening sometime in the fourth quarter. We will also be opening our 2nd property in Phuket, a 4 star Thai resort with an incredible sea view in the Kata area of Phuket. Ongoing projects which we will be opening next year are located in Vietnam where we plan to have over 500 rooms and we are also looking at Langkawi and Kuala Lumpur to expand the GLOW brand.
